Why is the #LegendariumOf @MARVEL's Hero-'Ensemble' Called "The #Avengers"? someone on @Quora might know - @WIRED #Avenge #Avenging

and no, I'm not even thinking of The ORIGINAL Avengers; though the original might've influence the title of 'the fully realized'Avengers

That question came to mind when I saw the Russo Brothers discussing each of the individual characters

The word “Avenge” is built on ancient words that mean “ |To (or Upon) + to Claim, Punish” (to |Vindicate by |Inflicting |Pain or Evil upon the |Wrong|doer).

#Vengeance

Quora-users (at the 'avenge'-link above) say it started when Ant-Man, Wasp & Iron Man 'avenged' Thor & The Hulk against Loki (who had tricked Hulk into destroying a railroad and then diverted the distress-call that was meant for The Fantastic Four and sent it instead to Thor hoping to lure him to his destruction.

Although now I hear that 'Avenger' was a military-nickname
for Carol Danvers (who became Captain Marvel—
I wonder if she's related to the folks who adopted Kara
"Supergirl" Zor-El ...), who inspired Nick Fury to
start The Avengers Initiative when she ascended into the
cosmos ... or something (I haven't seen CAPTAIN MARVEL
 yet ...)

But the first 'vengeance' I remember was for Agent Coulson, whom Loki had killed (apparently, though the TV-show reveals that all Coulson needed was a trip to T.A.H.I.T.I. and he was fully-recovered and ready to take his leader-position)!

In fact–as I recall–Thor (possibly in THOR: RAGNAROK) suggested changing their name to The Re-vengers (especially after 'the old team' split up in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR ... tho most of them reunited in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR).
The Russo Brothers list the members of The Avengers:
  • The Original Team
    • Nick Fury - the founding leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. (The Avengers' administrative arm?)
      • Captain Marvel - maybe not the First Avenger, but the Original Avenger (Carol Danvers)
      • S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill
        • speaking of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Why aren't Agents Coulson & -Daisy (Quake/Skye/Mary Sue Poots/0-8-4/Tremors/Little Miss Richter Scale/whatever) & -May & -Fitz & -Simmons etc. included? ... that brings up time-travel—is this one of those things where 'the world/Universe was decimated, but The Avengers fixed it so the common people don't even know anything happened!'
        • Agent 13 (Sharon Carter)
        • and are The Fantastic Four even 'a thing' in this Universe?
    • Tony Stark (Iron Man, son of Howard Stark), who brought in
      • War Machine (James "Rhodey" Rhodes)

      • Harold "Happy" Hogan
    • Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver)
    • Thor (Odinson)
      • his adopted brother Loki
      • his fellow Asgardian Heimdal
      •  "      "           "           Valkrie (whom the Russos don't mention)

      • Betty Ross
    • Captain America (Steve Rogers)
      • S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Peggy Carter (not heavily discussed above, though she IS 'mentioned' as "the reason Captain America ... ended his story the way he did)"
    • Black Widow - a villain-turned-into-a-hero (though I think she did her 'villain-stuff' BEFORE she joined the team)
    • Hawkeye (Clint Barton, whom I don't think the Russos listed above (he might've been 'mentioned,' as he was crucial to the opening))
    • Ant-Man (Scott Lang, unmentioned above)
      • The Wasp (Hope Van Dyne, unmentioned above)
      • Hank Pym
    • Captain Marvel
  • They had to go beyond the Bio/Techno-Wizardry and back to the Original Wizardry—Magic
    • Doctor Strange (which is also his name BEFORE he 'supes up')
    • Wong
    • Karl Mordo
    • The Ancient One
  • the team from Wakanda (where they somehow got Captain America's shield without introducing ...)
    • Black Panther (T'Challa, king of Wakanda)
    • Okoye
    • Shuri (related to Sha'uri from STARGATE?)
    • Ayo
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy (as if Asgard didn't propel The Avengers' story far enough into the Universe)
    • Gamora & Nebula, adopted daughters of Thanos
    • Mantis
    • Drax the Destroyer
    • Groot
    • Rocket Raccoon (whom Thor calls "Bunny")
    • Star-Lord (Peter Quill)
      • who was adopted by Yondu Udonta
But how can you have a team of heroes without a team of villains?
  • Thanos
    • Ebony Maw
  • Red Skull (Johann Schmidt)
  • Abomination (Emil Blonsky)
  • Iron Monger (Obadiah Stane)
  • Whiplash (Ivan Vanko)
  • Justin Hammer

  • Crossbones (Mark Rumlow)
  • Ronan the Accuser
  • Taserface
  • Kaecilus
  • Ego
  • Vulture (Adrian Toomes)
  • Hela
  • Killmonger (Eric Stevens)
  • Malekith, The Dark Elf (or was that just Dormammu?)
  • Nova Prime (Irani Rael)
  • Starhawk (Stakar Ogord)
  • GrandMaster
  • The Other
And if I forgot any major characters (as many of my sources did), please tell me who I left out in the comments below! Thanks.

Surfing around to find out 'which character I most identify-with,' I find that I'm most like ... Peggy Carter? Iron Man? Doctor Strange? Black Panther

*They could reveal–in one of the 'Phase 5 or -6 or -7-etc' prequels–that The Avengers were a thing in full operation in the UK when Nick Fury added himself and all the 'enhanced individuals' to the roster ...
