Intergalactic is a compound of the prefix Inter- and the word #Galactic. The word “Galactic” is built on ancient words that mean "of The Milky Way (the Bright Band of Stars around the Circle of the Night Sky)" (and yes; the Greeks and then the Romans called the #MilkyWay "the Road of Milk," as that's what it looked like to them ... very 'human' of us to refer to 'all other star-collections' as #Galaxies as well).
