First, "Purpose" is not necessarily 'Meaning' or 'Passion' or Goal. It's a way-of-life that makes a marginal difference in the world (if it's something you're good at). Cultivating purpose in your life can prolong your life, can reduce depressive symptoms and can improve your satisfaction in life.
They've found four categories of purpose:
- Creative - satisfied by the chances to perform
- ProSocial - with the main goal of helping others
- Financial
- Personal Recognition
And people find their purpose in one of these ways (usually).
- Proactively - they locate their goal and work toward it
- Accidentally - they basically see the pragmatic results of what they've been doing all along
- Peers - they pursue a passion similar to the one their colleagues pursue
