What I show here is 'the group of words' that give "that name" (below linked to a discussion of some of the confusion) a place to connect to your vocabulary ... deeper sources that firm the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...
The name “Xenu” is built on ancient words that mean |Foreigner, |Guest, |Stranger (or maybe on the name of the Hulking-Alien who crashed on Earth & threatened to conquer it ... in the MARVEL comic-book).

Ranker gives us some (secret?) details on the mythical forefather:
  • well, maybe he's a fore-'deadbeat dad'---the source of all humanity's neuroses
  • he (or his species) referred to Earth as |Teegeeack
  • interesting, the spiritual beings that L. Ron Hubbard called |Thetans are actually 'the spiritual beings whom Xenu imprisons on Earth' ...
  • hmm ... maybe they were "pure spirits" like LRH indicates are now within humans, but Xenu had to deal with massive overpopulation & opted for the same solution MARVEL's Thanos tried (except--rather than 'Snapping them out of existence'--Xenu captured them, dumped them into Earth/Teegeeack's volcanoes, & separated them from their Thetans with atomic-bombs)
  • He then captured all the Thetans and subjected them to 'Soul Implants' (horror-movie engraved 'traumatic memories' (called |Engrams) in them---memories like Jesus' crucifixion, Rome's persecution of Christians, Nazi's Holocaust of the Jews, Muslim terrorist-groups' terrorism)
  • He then set up a force-field-type-thing to keep Thetans from escaping the Earth when they're released from the humans' bodies ... somehow set up so that he gets freed from his imprisonment if we escape ours.
    • There's also a totally separate alien-species--The Fifth Invader Force--who are now trapped here with us (along with their space-station---which everyone thinks is just The Moon)
  • THIS INFORMATION COULD BE DANGEROUS TO ANY NON-SCIENTOLOGISTS OR ANY SCIENTOLOGISTS BELOW 'OT Ⅲ (THE LEVEL CALLED "OPERATING THETAN THREE," ACHIEVED AFTER YOU BUY OVER-$350,000 OF SCIENTOLOGY-LITERATURE & -'EDUCATION'). That danger is the reason why all Scientologists will deny the story of Xenu---referring to it as "a space opera" (a lot like STAR WARS)
  • The Thetans existed 4 quadrillion years ago, created our universe (The |MEST Universe), formed these bodies in order to experience sensual pleasure, and ...
  • The Thetans then managed to possess- and awaken within-enough human bodies to rise against him, capture him, & keep him in an electrified cave on an unknown desert planet.
