Reminded to Confess My Love of 'Superhero #SoapOperas,' by @Allure_Magazine's Alert on the Need for #MaleFeminism (#SupeOperas like #TheBoys @TheBoysTV, #Supergirl @TheCWSupergirl, #TheFlash @CW_TheFlash ... back as far as #BuffyTheVampireSlayer @BuffyTVS & @StarTrek)

'That word' (below-hyperlinked to editor Danielle's lamentation of this world where "guy-things & girly-things" is 'A thing') is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

Soap Operas” are |Melodramatic |Radio- and then Television-Serials (so called because their Sponsors were often Soap-manufacturers---I suppose that's from back when 'the only people listening-or-watching at that time of day' were the stay-at-home spouses (the home-soap's biggest customers) ... a genre that 'spilled-over' from the |Westerns they'd call #HorseOpera,
(and Soap Operas then inspired the name of the Science-Fiction Subgenre #SpaceOpera and the Musical-|Theater Subgenre #RockOpera ... and I imagine they have #JazzOpera & #FolkOpera & #RapOpera ...).

#SoapOpera #Opera

The word "Opera" is built on ancient words that mean "to Work, Produce in Abundance" (applied to the Musical Compositions of some Enthusiastic Florentine (of |Italy) |Amateurs who sought to bring the Classic Greek Plays to the Then-Modern Stage; applied to the Radio-Dramas because their Music Frequently Featured a Cowboy Singing to His Horse).

I've been obsessing over 'the realization that my favorite superhero-shows were all Soap Operas' ever since it was pointed out by The Cosmonaut.

And 'Soap Operas' are another one of the 'girly-things' I'm not supposed to like since I'm a guy who enjoys 'guy-things'---laser-guns and explosions and sci-fi adventure etc.

But I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVE superhero-'soap operas!' You know the difference---it's like a cliffhanger--the old 'will Batman & Robin escape?' or 'will Superman save Lois Lane?'--but then they slip in something 'girly' like "will MJ marry Peter? (SPIDER-MAN)" or "will Barry forgive his daughter? (THE FLASH)"

And in the latest 'supe-opera,' Hugh Jr. makes a couple statements that make his character 'the kind of feminist I want to be':
  • He "criticizes" Billy Butcher for calling people "cunts" or "twats (pronouncing it 'twATTS' rather than 'twawts')" when he's telling them how weak or wussy they are. Hugh tells Billy that 'cunts' & 'twats' are stronger & more-durable than men's genetalia--vajes take a pounding & survive as new human beings emerges through them, while peens ... guys practically DIE if their nuts-are too cold or -get kicked or punched.
  • He tells Annie "Starlight" that he chews his fingernails "to the quick" ... he's not sure what 'the quick' is (and I'm not sure what's "feminist" about that, but it's just-- I dunno; I guess it demonstrates how 'soap opera' THE BOYS is).
