Like many, I came to the Internet full of dreams that were fueled by the HACKERS (Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Fisher Stevens)-vision of nerds-around-the-world getting ... I dunno, "rich"; by 'hacking' (i.e.–in this case–learning and sharing secrets about the world, or something).

But–part of growing-up, I guess–I 'discovered' that "success" is only shown by 'how much money you make in doing your job.' And money is only made on the web by "Advertising"—

ohmany performers & writers 'focus on their craft' and are paid to do their specialties (and other tasks that don't seem to involve advertising); but it all serves the purpose of 'moving audience-traffic to see "paid-announcements encouraging them to buy products & services & -to watch other performers (who perform to move traffic to see additional paid-announcements encouraging ... etc.)")

But "success (in that way)" is only a secondary goal for me—secondary to 'being a Friend to all' ... or something—let's go ahead & focus on Traffic for a second ...

'That word' (below-hyperlinked to the Autosurf-Exchange I'm currently using) is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The word “Traffic” is built on ancient words that mean "Across (Trans-) + either 'to Rub (Friction)' or 'to Make, Do'" (to Touch Repeatedly, Handle, Distribute ... and yes, the verb-form is spelled with an "-ick").

I thought to say 'I didn't want to use bait to attract people to read this,' but then I remembered that Lord Jesus Christ "attracted" most of His friends by offering to make them "Fishers of Men."

I suppose He was implying that–rather than catching fish and earning their wages by bringing the fish to the market–they'd start catching people and would earn their wages by bringing the people to the Church.

Of course you can see how that translates to 'Artists work their craft and earn their wages by bringing people to the Show. (Oh, we're often convinced that the performer is paid for 'their time'; but where do you think the paying Producers get the money?)

Anyway ... I (rightly?) 'didn't project that my "talents" could attract an audience on their own,' so I started looking at Traffic-Builders:
  • of course, there are tons-&-tons of 'search-engine tricks'—not the 'search-engine hacks (that most search-engine administrators are too smart to let go-on for too long),' but the whole "skill-set" known as SEO (Search-Engine Optimization): which is basically 'using words (in your site/blog's text and in its base-code) that people are searching-for on Google, Yahoo!, Bing ... AltaVista, AskJeeves, etc.
  • Then there's Link-Trading, which is basically where you 'ask people whose sites you link-to to link back to yours'

(with blogs, you used to be able to post your own link in the linked-to blogs' comment-sections; but too many people 'overdid that' (spamming people's comment-sections to make the search-engines think there were 'untold multitudes' linking to their pages) and so now the search-engines look for those & flag the violators ... that's why I use "nofollow"-tags in all the links that lead directly to my blog or -to a site that I've already linked-to in the same post).
    • I also do a (kind of an) 'instant Link-Trade' on Twitter (using Buffer.com to "broadcast" links). When I link to a fellow Twitter-user's website, I'll usually include "@[their Twitter-username]" in the subject line. Then (according to the way each user's account is set up) they'll get a Tag-notification–so they can come read the post & share it if they like–and some will even show up 'on that user's Twitter-page.'
  • A few sites run 'Surf-Trading' (I think it's called ... it's been a while since I've used one)—where you log into the site and look at a series of members' websites, and–according to the number of websites you visit–the site will display your webpage a number of times.
    • You may have seen 'that banner' at the base of several of these posts—the rectangle with the text "Auto Surf Traffic; Quality Traffic with No Clicking!" I guess that's general enough to cover 'the many reasons people want traffic,' but I might want to 'design' a more-specific banner to tell people 'I'm not after "traffic that advertisers pay me for," not as much as "I just want to be 'heard' (or 'read')."'
  • And there are another coupla 'tricks' (and these are more "hacker"-y than SEO, so I'm hesitant to use them) ... I'm not sure what their "technical" names are—they use what are called "redirects" (they're like Rick-Rolling, but different ... rather than 'send you to something totally different than what they say it'll be,' they send you past something totally different (either an 'intertstitial' (an "after these messages, we'll be right back"-message, a commercial) or as a frame on top of the link they send you-to)).

One's called LinkBrander—where (once you're subscribed) you give it the URL of a link your going to make, and it gives you back the URL to 'a redirect to that link (with a frame pasted on it ... it's the same page as the first URL, but a) with a title YOU choose in the browser's title-bar & b) with a small ad in the top of the browser-frame (or sometimes a whole-page advertisement between the link-click & the page-landing)).
