The word “Niece” is built on ancient words that mean "Grandson, |Nephew (although they've had 'the feminine versions (meaning Grandaughter) for almost as long)" (long ago, Niece was also used for 'any Female Relative' ... and 🤔---I guess you can spell it #Grandaughter OR #Granddaughter (the way Etymonline spells it).
(And the syllable #Grand- is "a special use of Grand (we'll get to 'the special use of Great' ... especially since there's no such word as #Granduncle #Grandaunt #Grandniece or #Grandnephew---they skip straight to 'Great-,' I guess), used to mean 'a Generation Older-than (for #Grandfather #Grandmother ...
((obviously the original meaning of Generation, not the Age-Group meaning it's taken)---extended- (reversed?) to 'a Generation Younger than (for #Grandson Granddaughter).'")
Acually, 'that sense of Grand' is carried through to Niece through its infamous root *nepot- (as in |Nepotism).
