And I find you understand words better if you look at 'the words at their base' (then going on to look at the words at those words' bases, then the words at those words' bases, etc.-etc. ad infinitum)
Delta (Δ (δ), the Fourth letter of the Greek alphabet) is built on ancient words that mean "Tent-Door" (used for 'the |Mouth of a River' after Herodotus noticed the shape of the mouth of the |Nile).
The W.H.O. named the variant 'Delta' because it was the fourth variant they felt compelled to "award" with such a name (they explain more here), but there was also an image (like the one above) joking that they named the variant after 'the brainwave frequency Delta' because you have to be asleep to believe it 🤣
