Sadie Hawkins Day (inspiring the popular #SadieHawkinsDance) was fictionally invented by |Hezebiah Hawkins when he was worried that his daughter Sadie would never find a husband unless he arranged the Sadie Hawkins Day Races in their little town of |Dogpatch (the setting of Al Capp's comic-strip (made into a stage-musical) LIL' ABNER).
Sadie is a familiar form of #Sarah (& #Sarai #Sara #Sally #Saracen, etc.), a name built on ancient words that mean Princess (Ruler, |Queen).
Hawkins (or #Hawking #Habich #Habicht ... although it was probably the name of someone Capp knew or -had heard of) is a diminutive of |Hawk---a nickname for someone with a |Fierce, |Hawk-like Appearance.
I sometimes get a little 'thrill' from realizing that I have the same birthday as several famous people, and enough other people get that thrill from seeing their birthday-cohort (both the currently-famous & the probably-not-yet famous) that I figure it's worth doing 'one of these entries for every birthday' ...
