#HappyBirthday to Y'all (in the #October5 #BirthdayCohort with #NealDeGrasseTyson @neiltyson & @DanielBaldwin & ... You?) on #GetFunky Day | @HolidaysCalendr @BirthdayMates #TheFamousPeople @YourTango @MySundayMass

... or -on 'whichever of these holidays &or event-anniversaries you celebrate!'

Holidays Calendar explains National Get #Funky Day in a report linked through 'that word' below; but first I want to understand that word better. And I find you understand words better if you look at 'the words at their base' (then going on to look at the words at those words' bases, then the words at those words' bases, etc.-etc. ad infinitum)

The word “Funky” is from #Funk + -y (tagged #suffixY).
It began to develop an approving sense in jazz slang c. 1900, probably on the notion of "earthy, strong, deeply felt." Funky also was used early 20c. by white writers in reference to body odor allegedly peculiar to blacks. The word reached wider popularity c. 1954 (it was defined in "Time" magazine, Nov. 8, 1954) and in the 1960s acquired a broad slang sense of "fine, stylish, excellent."
The word "Funk" is built on ancient words that mean "to |Smoke" (|Fume).
The suffix "-y" (meaning Full of- or Characterized by-) is a form of the suffix #ic, built on an ancient suffix that indicates-Origin (or -a Chemical of a Higher |Valence then one ending in -ous). (comparable to #suffixAge #genic #ical #ics #istic #suffixMetric #suffixLing)

I sometimes get a little 'thrill' from realizing that I have the same birthday as several famous people, and enough other people get that thrill from seeing their birthday-cohort (both the currently-famous & the probably-not-yet famous) that I figure it's worth doing 'one of these entries for every birthday' ...

Today's Birthday-Cohort

Astrologically, their sign is Libra ... no matter WHICH stars they were born under: playwright Clive Barker, basketball-star Grant Hill, 'Willem Dafoe'-lookalike Jeff Conaway, musician (and not the political guy) Steve Miller, football's Barry Switzer, Kate Winslet, (founder of McDonald's restaurants) Ray Kroc, Bernie Mac, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jesse Eisenberg, Karen Allen (Indiana Jones' former/rekindled love in RAIDERS of the LOST ARK), Nicky Hilton Rothschild (yes, Paris Hilton's sister), Bob Geldof (who thought up Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" (for famine-relief in Africa)), President Chester A. Arthur, Daniel Baldwin (Baldwin-brother who played Paul Delano in the 2013 remake of Hawaii Five-O), hockey-star Mario Lemieux ... and lots more I don't recognize (maybe you do recognize some ... you can find the date at the birthday-cohort link)

(and--if you or someone you know about has a birthday today
--please mention them (and how you know them or -know
about them) in the comments, thanks)

My Heart of the Nation calendar says that we (Catholics) are celebrating Saint Faustina Kowalska & Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, with the clergy wearing White Vestments for the Optional Memorials (Green Vestments otherwise)
