@Snopes is #SendingOutAnSOS (#SaveOurSnopes (#teehee This may seem a bit SPAMMY, but isn't it GOOD to have spam in an emergency?) #SOS)

In fact, S.O.S. may have been 'SPAM before they even invented the meat-product it's named-after!' We'll find out later; but First ...

Snopes begs for your support in a collection of reports linked through 'that initialism' below; but first I want to understand that initialism better. And I find you understand words better if you look at 'the words at their base' (then going on to look at the words at those words' bases, then the words at those words' bases, etc.-etc. ad infinitum)

SOS stands for Save Our Ship ... umm, actually? no. I mean, kinda; but no. It's actually just International Morse Code for a Telegraphic Distress-Call (its oral equivalent being Mayday (which isn't 'the first day of May,' but is a transliteration of the French for 'Help Me')).
The IMC-founders almost chose #CQD ("Come Quickly, Distress" or "Message for Ships Nearby: Danger") instead.
