#PeopleOfColor, #INeedYouToPray and other #Phrases that Need to Die | @GQMagazine @prayerDotOrg @Bustle @Businessinsider @ReadersDigest
'That word' (below-hyperlinked to a discussion that started because of an
article I read in GQ)
is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the
foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...
The word “Phrases” is built on ancient words that mean "to Tell, |Declare, |Point Out, Show, Inform, Indicate (to oneself), Think- or Muse upon, |Consider, |Contrive, Suppose, Believe, Imagine, Perceive, |Observe" (possibly all based on words that mean |Midriff, |Diaphragm (of |Phreno-), referring to the Heart or the Mind---said to house the Wits, Senses, Sanity).

So far, the 'Phrases that Need to Die' are:
- People of Color
- GQ Magazine explains in detail (at that link), but in summary ... White is as 'colorful' as any other shade!

- I Need You to Pray for Me
-
I feel I should explain this one a little: there's nothing wrong with
'praying for others' (including me) nor -with 'telling others about bad
conditions you're in that you are praying-about & asking the others to
pray with you'; but You don't need others to pray for you!
I suppose the idea comes from our human condition of 'needing encouragement' (the bigger the group of encouragers, the more-confident you are in your ability to conquer your struggle).
Since that's the reason people post (on the social-networks) that they 'need your prayers,' I usually don't voice the dissent ... I just link them to BibleHub™'s Romans 8:27 where it's explained that 'the prayers that Our Heavenly Father hears' are actually The Holy Spirit's interpretation of your infantile wailing. But the misuse of 'Prayers' still insults Our Father's house!
- Call a Spade a Spade
- It originally meant 'what we all thought it meant' (call something what it is), but they find that--in the 1920s--it became a derogatory term for a black person.

- Hip-Hip-Hooray
- Also originally 'not racist'--a variation of a common phrase used by shepherds to urge sheep onward--they also used it as a rallying cry when they came together as German citizens to hunt down Jews who had moved into their ghettos.

- Grandfather Clause or Grandfathered In
- A phrase based on a racist law that stated you could only vote if your ancestors could vote before 1867 (I know the phrase now applies to a lot of advantages people get to take 'because their grandfathers did' or 'because they signed-on before rules applied to them'--probably the way I'm automatically sharing this on Twitter--but ... we just need to 'update the term' to something like "snuck in" or "squattered in.")

- Paddy Wagon
- 'Paddy' is short for "Patrick," slang term for "an Irish person." A cop's car is called a Paddy Wagon--either because cops are typically Irish or because Irish are stereotyped as rowdy ruffians who need to get taken in--and either way it just needs to stop.

- The Itis
- A form of lethargy typically suffered after one has eaten a lot. Nothing wrong with it, except that it needs to be called something different (because this is an abbreviation/euphemism for NΙΓγEΡitis)
