I Hear- (& Suspect there'll be a Lot of Noise about)-Rumors that @KamalaHarris is #Black-but-NOT-#AfricanAmerican | @CBSnews @Wikipedia

My friend-from-high-school (whose now an internationally-acclaimed singer) tells her friends-&-fans that Kamala Harris (Joe Biden's Presidential running-mate) is "the first African-American VP-candidate," and a chorus of her friends-&-fans erupted with exclamation, 'NO SHE IS NOT!'

I'm not sure; but I think my friend just briefly forgot the difference between Black and African-American ... something that's very easy to do.

'Those words' (below-hyperlinked to an explanation of the difference between the two 'ethnicities') is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The word “Black” is built on ancient words that mean "to Flash, Shine (like Fire), Burn (into Dark Ash)" (the racial reference was one of five coined by the Göttingen School of History in the late 18th century).

The word “African-American” refers to Americans whose ancestors 'traveled' to the New World from #Africa.
The word “Africa” might be built on ancient words that mean |Dust, Earth (the word originally referred to just the area near Tunisia, but was soon applied to the whole Continent).

This is where the distinction (I originally heard from comedian Ralphie May) comes to mind—he reminds us that 'most Black Americans today probably haven't even been to Africa!'

Heavy (the site linked through the picture at the top) tells us that Kamala Harris is of Jamaican- and Indian descent—no mention of "Africa" to be seen.
