No! That is not why you are a Senator! The problem is not with you! You are above the problem, telling your constituents how 'we' (or--to be specific--they) deal with the problem.
Unless you believe that your constituents are too stupid to handle the problem without 'big daddy gubbermint to spank them soundly if'n they don't do as he say.' Unless you believe the gun-makers & -sellers WANT their products used for something other than self-defense. Unless you think "Democracy" means 'Rule of the People who know better than the unelected citizens!"
I'm a non-party voter (my 'voter's registration' says "Independent"), but--if I had to be a Democrat or Republican--I would be a Republican, because they truly do believe in 'government by the people.' The people are not "governed" by our elected officials; we are "represented" by our elected officials.
