Today's meaning of the word "Third World" was built during the Cold War, referring to countries that were neither 'Capitalisms aligned with NATO' nor 'Soviets aligned with the Communist bloc.' The use of Third- and First World soon evolved to mean 'Undeveloped- and Highly |Developed countries' (respectively), and Second World fell out of usage.
