They're called The Dog Days of Summer because of the rising & setting of Sirius (The Dog Star, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major) in the night sky. 
The word “Scorch” (meaning of a word in the foundation beneath 'Sirius') is built on ancient words that mean "to Shrink, Dry up" or maybe Ex- + "Cork" or maybe "to Strip the Skin from-."
