Why Are #AbdominalExercises called #Crunches? @MasterClass #Abdomen #Crunch #Abdominal #Crunching #Abdominals #Crunchy #CrunchyGranola
That was what I wondered when Microsoft Rewards gave me a link to a MasterClass on Crunches.
If 'The Internet' knows, I'll link to the answer through 'those words' below; but first I want to understand those words better. And I find you understand words better if you look at 'the words at their base' (then going on to look at the words at those words' bases, then the words at those words' bases, etc.-etc. ad infinitum)
The word “Abdomen” is built on bedrock beneath ancient words that mean |Belly---perhaps words that mean Conceal (Set-, Put Off, -Away; in the sense that it Conceals the |Viscera or that it is Concealed by Proper |Dress ... but that probably has nothing to do with the word's root).
The word "Crunch"---it's said to derive from "the sound made when you Chew Crunchy Food." But do you make a 'Crunch' when you do a half sit-up? If a 'Crunch' is based on the sound that the action makes, why aren't half sit-ups called "Uggs"?
It might be from the slang that describes Environmentalists & Health-|Nuts as "Crunchy" due to the pride they have for frequently eating Crunchy Granola ...
