Why Celebrate #July4 & not #Julixth, #Julynth, #Julyventh, #Julyteenth, #Julytieth, #Julytisecond, #Julytisixth or #Augusond? @DeclarationRes (and #HappyBirthday to the #AlBirthdayCohort of #MaliaObama (daughter of @BarackObama) & @AlMadrigal & ... you? and all these others?) | @BirthdayMates #TheFamousPeople @YourTango @MySundayMass
Juneteenth (June 19) is a national holiday because--although Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1 a couple years beforehand--none of the slaves in Galveston, Texas, heard about it until it was announced on June 19 a few years later.
Why wasn't January 1 celebrated as Emancipation Day? And yet July 4 continues to be celebrated as Independence Day, despite the fact that many of The People couldn't hear about it until days/weeks later (& a few knew about it a couple days before)?
Today's holiday's explanation is linked through 'the main word' below; but first I want to understand that word better. And I find that you understand words better when you look at the other words at the bases of the words you're thinking-of ...
The word "|Strew|" (as I've already done posts for Declare (built on Clear, built on Shout, built on Voice, built on Speak ... built on #Strew)) is built on ancient words that mean "to |Spread" (|Sprinkle, |Scatter).
#Strewed #Strewn #Strewinng #Bestrew
Anyway ... I sometimes get a little 'thrill' from realizing that I have the same birthday as several famous people, and enough other people get that thrill from seeing their birthday-cohort (both the currently-famous & the probably-not-yet famous) that I figure it's worth doing 'one of these entries for every birthday'
... Including Today's Birthday-Cohort
Astrologically, their sign is Cancer ... no matter WHICH stars they were born under: businessman George Steinbrenner, comedian Al Madrigal (whom I've never heard use 'his birthday' in his show), boxer Floyd Mayweather, geographer George Everest (after-whom--I guess--they named the famous mountain), President Calvin Coolidge, Bill Withers (who sang "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone"), novelist Neil Hawthorne, playwright/screenwriter Neil Simon, businesswoman Leona Helmsley, cartoonist Rube Goldberg, former First Daughter Malia Obama ... and lots more I don't recognize (maybe you do recognize some ... you can find the date at the birthday-cohort link)
(and--if you or someone you know about has a birthday today
--please mention them (and how you know them or -know
about them) in the comments, thanks)
