@Bing quizzed me on a Sports-#League I Didn't Know We HAD, so ... | @Wikipedia @FitzAndTantrums @SearchQuotes
I felt it important to 'search' for all the American sports-leagues and list them for you here.
The first listing Bing sent me-to is linked through 'the main word' below. Here, I list a few 'root-words' that tie that word into our lexicon....
The word “League” (originally referring to allied nations, then extending to political associations and then to sports associations) is built on ancient words that mean "to Bind" ( |Tie ... if not referring to the Medieval English Distance of about Three Statute-Miles (or about an Hour's Hike)). #Leagued #Leaguing #LeagueOfNations #Interleague #BigLeague
I suppose that its use to describe 'levels of professional sports' ( #MajorLeague or 'Big League,' above #MinorLeague or #LittleLeague) led to people referring to the 'Quality' ( |Morality, |Glamour) of Some Individuals as #OutOfYourLeague if you do not seem to be 'of the |Community that's |Suitable' for a relationship with them. #OutOfHisLeague #OutOfHerLeague #OutOfMyLeague
The linked page doesn't list all six of those leagues (leaving out NASCAR and the PGA), but lists one not pictured:
- Major League Baseball - honestly "America's National Pastime," as it was started in 1876 & officially confirmed in 1901
- National Basketball Association - started in 1946, changing its name in 1949
- National Football League - starting in 1920, taking the current name in 1922
- National Hockey League - formed in 1917
- Major League Soccer--the league about-which Bing surprised me--is notably not one of those "Big Four." It began in 1996.
- National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing
- Professional Golfers' Association (of America)
