The word “Par” (Standard fixed by consent or by natural conditions, Average, Usual Amount; Value of one Currency in terms of Another) is built on ancient words that mean |Equal, |Well |Matched (atop 'disputed foundations,' possibly including "to |Grant, |Allot (with Reciprocity, as in Quid |Pro Quo)," "to |Traffic in, |Sell (or |Give Equal |Value for)," or |By, |For (see |Per)).
((I had thought it all came from the Golf-meaning, but that didn't come up until about 30 years after the original!))
