The word “Slime” is built on ancient words that mean |Sticky, |Slippery (ancient words that are also the sources of |Stay, |Adhere to, |Disappear, Snail, |Spittle, to |Smear, Follow (Stick to), |Smooth, |Marsh, Pool, |Lake, Anoint, Mud, |Mire, to |Daub, |Rub out, |Erase).
They explain better at the link; but what they explain is that Slime (brainless, boneless, etc.) acts a lot like regular organisms---showing intelligence without a brain.
My speculator goes wild here ... 'Maybe the brain IS slime! Maybe The Brain evolved first, and the body that it built to surround itself was ITS adaptation!'
