'It's not an "S," it's My Family-Crest that stands for "Hope" - EL Mayarah - "Stronger Together"' ... The First Modern #Retcon? @SupermanHomepage @FDdotorg @MerriamWebster

'That word' (below-hyperlinked to a blog-article about 'the "S" that became "a Family-Crest that happens to look like an 'S'"') is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The word “Retcon” (literary device in which the form or context of a previously established narrative is changed) is a portmanteau (coined by Roy Thomas (or by 'an anonymous an enthusiastic ALL-STAR booster he heard at one of Adam Malin's Creation Conventions in San Diego')) of the words #Retroactive #Continuity" (All-Star Squadron (vol. 1) #18, letters column, dated February 1983, published by DC Comics).
The word "Retroactive" is built on ancient words that mean "to Drive- or Move- (to |Draw |Forth) |Back (from Retro-)" #Retroactively.
The word "Continuity" is built on ancient words that mean "to be Uninterrupted, |Hang Together (see Contain)" #Continual #Continually #Continuous #Continuously

that's Superboy, saying "I chose this symbol not only to stand for Superboy, and later Superman - it will also mean Saving lives, Stoping crime, and giving Super-aid wherever it's needed!"They 'made the change' in the 1978 Superman movie ... and yes, it was originally 'an "S"!' as "proven" by this image (taken from "More Fun Comics #101"):

Although there's a possibility that–tho Kal El is there admitting he thinks it's an "S"–he actually took the emblem from the blanket he was wrapped-in, but didn't find out til later that the 'S' was actually the shape of his family-crest

(maybe in the years he spent in his Fortress of Solitude in the movie)—kinda like most Americans don't know that the $ on our paper-money isn't actually an "S" (but it's either 'the symbol for a piece-of-eight' or 'a representation of the healing-serpent on Moses' staff').

This came up when I was re-watching The CW's SUPERGIRL (tho I think it was an episode from back when CBS aired it on their primary network ... the character Cat Grant actually made a joke about 'the team of good-guys' turning-out like 'the racially-diverse cast of a show on The CW'), and Kara "Supergirl" Zor-El clarifies to Jimmy Olsen that the "S" (which he knows is the symbol for The House of El) actually means "Stronger Together."

Merriam-Webster says the first retcon was probably when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle changed Sherlock Holmes's death from 'a death' to 'a staged distraction.' But I think the first retcon ('retconning the retconning'? maybe) was probably in The Bible ... the way they take 'all of history' and re-envision it as "planned by Our Heavenly Father," eh?
