'The bad idea of mob-rule' is the reason why we still use the Electoral College. The way I learned about it (from an Amazon Prime documentary), it's designed so that the President serves 'those who voted for his opponents' just as much as 'those who voted for him.'
The word “Mob” carries the scent of “|Fickle, Movable, Mobile” (a Crowd, the American Crime mob–sometimes called the |Combination, but never the |Mafia–was an |Alliance of Jews, Italians & Irishmen who organized the Supply & Production of Liquor during the period of Prohibition (when Alcoholic Drink was Illegal, no matter what kind of 'License' you had).)
