The word “Billionaire” is built on Billion (on the model of Millionaire ... that might not explain the suffix #aire, except that it's part of a French word that means "a Person who is Worth 'a Million Dollars, -Pounds, -Francs etc.'" ...
(the suffix might also be based on ancient words that mean "Race, Place- or Field-of-one's-Origin.")
