The name “Bowdler” was originally de #Boelare (also evolving to #Bowdle & #Boulers & #Boullers & de #Bollers & de #Bullers).
That original surname (now attached to a castle in the village now known as Nederboelare, in the municipality of Geraardsbergen, in the province of East Flanders (Belgium)) is built on ancient words that mean Ball (for a Maker of Balls, or an Organizer of a Game of Boules (French for "Balls") ... or maybe for the |Castle where the family held Great |Dance-Parties (but--as any respectable lexicographer would say--probably not)).
I sometimes get a little 'thrill' from realizing that I have the same birthday as several famous people, and enough other people get that thrill from seeing their birthday-cohort (both the currently-famous & the probably-not-yet famous) that I figure it's worth doing 'one of these entries for every birthday' ...
