#Subaru Coins a Slightly-Different Meaning of #Underdog | #MakeADogsDay (October 22) @SUBARU_usa @Wikimedia @OnlineEtymology | #Under #Dog #Dogs #Underneath #DogHouse #UnderAchiever #Dawg #UnderAge

We'll talk about their 'coining attempt (with which I'm sure you can help them!)' below.

But first, let's look at 'that name' and the word they're changing (both below-hyperlinked to the commercials that they're changing it with)---words which you only know-about because they're connected to other words you know better, built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The name “Subaru” is built on the Japanese name for the |Pleiades star-cluster M45 (the Seven Sisters---one of whom is |Invisible, which is why there are only Six Stars in SUBARU's logo ... alluding to the companies that merged to form FHI).
The word “Underdog” (the Defeated Dog in Dog-Fighting) is built of the words #Under & #Dog.
The word “Under” is built on ancient words that also serve as foundation for other ancient words that mean Lower, |Below. as in #Hereunder #Thereunder #Underarm #Underbelly #Underbid #Underbred #Underbrush #Undercarriage #Underclass #Underclassman #Undercover #Undercurrent #Undercut #Underdeveloped #Underdone #Underdressed #Underemployed #Underestimate #Underexposed #Underfed #Underfoot #Undergarment
#Undergird #Undergo #Undergraduate #Underground #Undergrowth #Underhanded #Underlying #Underline #Underling #Undermine #Underneath #Underpants #Underpass #Underpaid #Underpinning #Underprivileged #Underrated #Underscore #Undersea
#Underserved #Undershirt #Underside #Undersign #Understated #Understatment #Understudy #Undertone #Undertow #Underutilize #Undervalue #Underwater #Underwear #Underwhelm #Underwrite
The word “Dog” (Quadruped of the Genus Canis) is built on ancient words that ... escape written memory, making the word's English etymology a great mystery (tho it seems noteworthy that the word replaced Old English's Hund (root of |Hound?) ... and many of 'the expressions that use the word' remind us that they were once little-more-than |Hunters' |Tools).

as in #BirdDog #Bulldog #DogCollar #Dogface #Dogfight #Dogfish #Dogged #Dogging #Doggy #Doggie #DogLeg #DogPaddle #DoggyPaddle #DogTag #Horndog #HotDog #HoundDog #Lapdog #MoonDog #SeaDog

To me, 'Underdog' always had a sense of "the competing sports-team or -player whom you don't expect to win." In fact, it might be a good idea for SUBARU to hire some famous 'underdogs who achieved victory' as spokemen for their "Underdogs" ... I can't think of any such sportsmen---but I'm not into sports enough to instantly remember such stories (except for maybe in movies---RUDY, RADIO, JERRY MAGUIRE, REMEMBER THE TITANS, THE BENCHWARMERS ... Teen Wolf?)
