I'll 'review' it in a minute (not the 'tell you how good or bad I think it is'-review, but the 'retell the story (without the production-value that makes it worth "ordering hulu to see the next season as soon as it's available"), but first ...

MARVEL's CLOAK & DAGGER (I don't know if the Freeform-version's story is different from the graphic novel) takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. And that's part of 'what gives Tyrone & Tandy their powers'—the mysteriousness of the area.

The 'power-instilling event' of-course involves "an explosion" (maybe with "radioactive materials" etc.), but there's a lot of 'psycho-spirituality' going on—a main character ('the sage' that Tyrone & Tandy go to for guidance as they learn about their maturing powers, the same way Buffy went to Giles) is a Voodoo ... I don't want to say 'Witch' (as the word has 'evil' connotations), and I don't want to say 'Priestess' (as the word connotes a more-public style, and she was more personal) ...

a Voodoo 'Advisor' sounds right ... though the word they used was "Voudon," although I think  her apprentice/niece Evita might've described 'Voodoo' as "a way of understanding any religion" (sort of like Buddhism ... oh, there are plenty who think that Buddhism is 'worshiping The Buddha'; but ... no, not going to go off on that tangent—just suffice it to say, I'm a Buddhist Christian.)

'Voodoo' (below-hyperlinked to your opportunity to see Freeform's presentation of the adventure-series) is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The word “Voodoo” is built on ancient words that mean "Spirit, Demon, Deity" (|Fetish connected with Snake-worship).

Chantelle Fusillier (the Voodoo Advisor) introduces 'the Spirit-Realm' (sort of like 'the Underworld' or 'Purgatory') of "the Loa," when we learn that she's a Mamba—which might be defined as 'a Voodoo Priestess,' but which she (and her apprentice/niece Evita) describe as "a Wife of 'the godlike beings of the Loa.'"

... Interesting ...
