The true sense of the word "Backpack" is (obviously) "Back + Pack."
'Pack' is from unknown origins beyond "Bundle" (term used by early Wool Traders).
'Back' is from ... it's not quite clear, but (especially in this case) I think it's heavily influenced by words that mean "Shoulder-Blade, Spine" (perhaps to differentiate vertical, Human backs from horizontal, Animal backs; 'words for the horizontal backs' being ousted by words related to "Ridge" (Mountain-Range)).
My Bing Rewards homepage-dashboard gave me a link to some early back-to-school backpack selections (from a simple $5 backpack to a complicated $110 wheeled book-carrying apparatus), but I wonder if you can't find better deals ...
