You Can't "Quote" God's Word, @CopelandNetwork @MySundayMass @ShepherdsChapel, but You CAN #Quip It (a 'Scripture-Quip' ... #Squip?)
I know a lot of you look at that and instinctively want to reply, "We can-too quote 'The Word of God!' We just open our Bibles & right-there it is!"
And--whether I approve or not--you're gonna keep on believing that (as I did, and as I still partly do ... The Word of God is formulated in our minds---sometimes 'when we read The Bible,' sometimes 'when we see beautiful acts-&-occurrences in nature-and-society.')
But I'm sure you know that 'your native language' (unless your native language is Greek or Aramaic (Hebrew)) wasn't the language the Scriptures were originally written-in; and a lot of its original meaning gets lost in the translation (something I think of whenever a preacher 'quibbles' over some miniscule grammar like 'welp, they wrote it with a CAPITAL "H" thar, so ...').
Hmm ... I guess I learned the word "Quip" at about the same time as I learned the word "Quote," so I mistook 'Quip' as meaning 'a short kind of Quote.'
Here, I list a few 'root-words' that tie that word into our lexicon....
The word |Quip| (which I always thought was another way of saying 'paraphrase of the quote' ... I guess people today mean it as 'a witty remark') is built on ancient words that mean |What, |Who (*kwo-, |Quibble). #Quippy #Quipped #Quipping #Quips
Heart of the Nation's calendar gives us these 'quips':
- Matthew 2:6 - Rejoice, for Jesus came as King and Good Shepherd.
- Luke 2:30-31 - The Lord made salvation known for all people.
- Luke 1:37 - God makes all things possible.
- Mark 16:7 - Seek the Risen Lord, and you will find Him.
- Matthew 28:17 - Worship even when you doubt.
- Mark 4:39 - In stillness, know the Lord's care for you.
- John 6:13 - Jesus provides abundant signs of His love.
- Luke 1:45-47 - Rejoice in the fulfillment of God's promises.
- Luke 6:10 - Do not hesitate to seek the Lord's help.
- Matthew 18:4 - Depend on the Lord with great humility.
- Luke 21:25 - Even when perplexed or dismayed, have faith.
- Luke 2:7 - Make room in your heart to welcome the Lord anew.
Maybe that's "the wrong definition of the word," but it's 'the definition I prefer.' Because most of us were introduced to Biblical Christianity through 'Squips' (a word I'm using in case 'my definition of "Quip"' hasn't caught-on yet)---
like the one that says, 'We'll let you into Heaven when you die if you agree with us that Jezus sal Yosele waMery (Jesus of Joseph & Mary) was born of a virgin, preached the Gospel of YHVH (God), was crucified for 'being proud of His ancestry,' was resurrected a few days later & was taken up into the sky.'
But will you find that anywhere in The Bible? Not exactly! The Bible has 'a transcript of long-held oral-tradition, in which The Main Character tells one of His peers/adversaries that "all who believe in the son of YHVH will live forever" (implying that--when we-believers DO die--our lives will continue the way Jesus's life continued after His death).'
But since that 'Squip' is put together outside of The Bible, many people take it as reason-to-believe that Christian Ministers are liars!
