The word “Sling” (to Throw, as one would with an Implement for Throwing Stones ... or such an implement (Hung between Two Points, like a Hammock)) is built on ancient words that mean "to |Slide, |Throw" (the Sweetened Liquor is so named from the idea of 'Throwing Back a Drink,' or from the German for "to |Swallow").

... I'm not sure ... it could be because TV-reception
used to involve various 'radio shack'-equipment (I know
they used 'wire-hangers' & 'aluminum- or tin-foil' to
improve antenna-reception ... maybe a 'sling' was
used for that.)
