@NOVApbs uncovers some surprises about the #Alphabet | #Alphabetic #Alphabetical #Alphabetically #Alphabetize #Alphabetization #Alphanumeric | @Jorgie915

'That word' (below-hyperlinked to NOVA's report on the Alphabet's history) is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The word “Alphabet” (Letters of a Language, and the Standard Order in which they are Arranged) is built on ancient words that mean |Alpha + |Beta (the first two letters of the Greek Alphabet, though they've taken on other meanings due to that arrangement (the First & the Following-|After) ... 'Alphabet' also supported by words that mean |Row- or |Array of |Letters, Lore- or Learning acquired through Reading (see |ABCs)).

a bit I remember from the above-linked special:
  • "A" & "a" are rotations of 'the picture of a cattle-head'
  • "B" & "b" are modified drawings of houses
  • "M" & 'm' are taken from drawings of Water.
  • "N" & 'n' are from symbols for Snake
    • ... and maybe they also say stuff about the etymology of all the other letters (like this chart I found on Pinterest)
  • C, c
  • D, d
  • E, e
  • F, f
  • G, g
  • H, h
