When connections on Twitter 'whine in horror' at the "idiocy" of Pence & Trump and others who 'dare' to go out in public without wearing 'masks' (or 'face-shields' or 'hazmat-suits' or whatever), I remind them that grown-ups have developed immune-systems (i.e. not just 'a list of viruses they're immune-to,' but also 'a process of developing immunity to "new viruses"*').
And I remind them not by saying that phrase, but by sharing a video of 'a respected elder' who explains how he developed his system:
That brings up cooties. Oh, it's possible that cooties are 'well-known' (or 'widely thought-of by most children') as "viruses carried by the opposite gender," but this is how 'they learn' (or maybe it's just 'how I learned via "quadrivial application") how the immune-system works—people carry viruses that you pick up from them, and your immune-system usually identifies the virus and throws it out of your body.
'That word' (below-hyperlinked to KidsHealth's tips on getting rid of head-lice, because ... that's where Bing sent me) is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...
The word “Cooties” is built on ancient words that mean "|Kutu (the Malay (Austronesian) name of a Parasitic, |Biting |Insect)" (Body |Lice (|Louse?)).
*A Twitter-connection specified that 'SARS-CoV-2'' (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) is "a Novel virus" (one to-which we haven't yet developed 'herd immunity,' like the immunity European settlers had to the viruses that killed many of the Native Americans).
Since she's a nurse, I imagine she's been taught that we don't develop 'herd immunity' today until someone develops a vaccine & widely distributes it ... but I wonder how humans developed 'herd immunity' before vaccines were invented.
