The word “Thyroid” is built on words that mean “Door-Shaped Shield, Oblong Form” (describing the Shield-Shaped Cartilage of the Adam's Apple just above the Gland ... -oid).
"Thyroxine" is "the active principle of the Thyroid Gland."
