G.I. stands for a few things—Government Issue/General Issue, Galvanized Iron (material of a trash-can that resembled a German artillery-shell) ... the popular idea that it stands for General Infantry (making those soldiers 'G.I. Joe's) is not thought to be the original meaning, though 'the bill-signed-into-law to provide resources to those- (and future-) veterans' referred to them as G.I.'s.
I suppose it's hoped we shift more-toward calling that generation (born in the 1900-to-1925, most of them serving in the World War Ⅱ) The Greatest Generation ... averse to the idea that its people 'destroyed their humanity' and became machines manufactured by the government.
Then of-course there's the G.I. Tract—the GastroIntestinal system of organs through which we multicellulars transform food into energy, -nutrients & -waste.
