The word “Excelsior” is rooted in ancient words that mean “Out from + Rise High, Tower (Lofty, Great, to be Prominent, Hill)” (Title of a Poem by Longfellow, trade-name for Thin Shavings of Soft Wood used to Stuff Cushions etc.)
and so-frequently stated by Stan Lee that I was tempted to claim that he coined the term!
Stephen Colbert coined "Truthiness" (not necessarily
'being the first one to make the word popular,'
but rather 'giving the word a slightly different meaning').
Whereas its original meaning was 'tower above so
that all can see how great you are,' Stan Lee
(especially now that people are wishing him 'Excelsior'
while they don't even know where he's headed) gave
it more of a 'be great, no matter what people think of you!'-
sense.
