The phrase “Mark of the Beast” is rooted in the 'ancient' (or at least 'very old') practice of Farmers—Marking their Cattle in order to Indicate Ownership. 'The Beast' is the Prophesied "False Idol of the End-Times," and 'The Mark' is said to be a marking that the end-times' people will wear in order that they may Buy-&-Sell (and those without 'The Mark' will not be allowed to conduct business😭).
'The Beast' (of prophecy—The Bible's book of Revelation) is one (or both) of "The Giant Creatures" (the first being "of the sea," the second "of the earth") who are predicted to rule mankind—the first 'being given power' by a Dragon who conquered the world before him, the second 'exercising the |authority of the first' and making a 'speaking |statue' of the first beast.
The words of the statue (|statute?) instruct the people to be marked (on the hand or the forehead) with either its name or the number of its name—666 or 616.
That is an 'uninterpreted' recounting of the prophecy. There are many ways to interpret this prophecy ... many interpretations & significations one could apply to the Scriptures (many meanings no one has discovered yet)—Who/What do The Mark, The Earth-Beast, The Sea-Beast, The Talking Statue, The Dragon, all the beings they conquer & support etc. represent?
I (an old fuddy-duddy annoyed by these always-increasingly-advanced sophistication of technology) might interpret it "the people have to take The Mark of 'dependency on new mobile technology' or else they will not be allowed to buy-&-sell ..."
I haven't thought about it long enough (& will not think about it) to apply 'the metaphorical characters' to 'the real-life people & groups & occurrences that fulfill them' ... people being required to have their i-devices 'in their hand' to buy things (right now only in reference to 'buying things-with coupons or -at discounted rates)
