'Classic Scholarship' puts the æther "above the terrestrial sphere"—the area which we all "know" is 'the empty vacuum of outer space.' I would guess (before I even read what today's scholars tell Wikipedia they think it is) that the æther is that empty space ... but also the empty space between subatomic particles (all around us)!

'That word' (below-hyperlinked to the Wikipedia page about the æther) is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...
