Most people first hear of 'the predestined mate' in The Bible's book of Genesis, which tells us that Yahweh stated, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a help-mate meet for his purpose."
And from that (and 'legions' of our 'forebears' (NOT "forebearers")), we suppose/hear/hope that each of us–just as "human" as Adam–is predestined for 'a help-mate meet for our purpose' ... as a Christian comedian put it, "my naked lady" 😀
But I guess that's 'leaving one or two things out' of the Genesis-story—Adam wasn't "just sitting around, waiting for Eve to be brought to him." And he did 'attempt companionship with many of the animals' too, but he never "set that as a goal"; he set about his purpose—to tend The Garden (oh, I'm sure you think "The Garden was already fully-grown & -tended by Yahweh!" but no,
As he spent more time with her, he learned what tastes served her best in what seasons (and she learned what aid made him better able to serve his purpose).
And what better way could she serve the purpose of helping him serve his purpose (a purpose that helped her serve her purpose) than to become one-another's Mate?
That word (the 'built-upon' one below)—there might be something more to that word ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which the our lexicon stands ...

Jehovah God taketh the man, and causeth him to rest in the garden of Eden, to serve it, and to keep it.)Adam set-about serving & keeping The Garden, and found that The Garden's care was better-accomplished when he saw that his good work served others as well as himself. The taste of the fruits was meaningless to him until he learned that Eve enjoyed one flavor better than another flavor.

The word “Mate” is built on “|Companion (|Partner, |Colleague, Friend) who has Food (|Meat)” (one of a |Wedded |Pair, form of address for |Fellow-|Sailors, -Laborers, -'Walk|about Guides on the |Australian |Outback (G`Day!),' -etc.;
(C.A.N.O.E. matches it with the |Officer on a |Merchant |Vessel whose Duty is to oversee the Execution of the Orders of the |Master or Commander (reminding me of the trope that says 'a sailor's First Love is The |Sea')).
What brings this up is 60 Minutes' recent story on John Green (VlogBrother, co-founding NerdFighter, author of a few popular books).
I don't know if the above '60 Minutes'-link discusses his marriage, but the television-segment featured a discussion with his wife ... where she describes 'the way it was' when they started to get to know each other—he was writing, she was proofreading/editing, and she says she would've ended the relationship if he hadn't written so well.
I doubt it, as I trust that John has other redeeming qualities (making him a good father, -husband, -brother, -etc.)
You know something about that word-history that
I don't mention (and that probably isn't mentioned
below)? 'Fill us in on it'- or just tell me what you
think (or ask me about something in this- or another-
word that confuses you) with a comment below,
