(Pardon me if the writing below starts to sound like
'a letter to the staff of the Oklahoma Gazette or of
LOOK@OKC etc.,' because–while I hope I'll answer
the question there–right-now I still don't know the
answer, and they're probably the best-qualified to
answer it and/or -to correct me if I'm wrong.)
An American citizen, one part of fulfilling my 'duty to my country' can be summarized as "taking advantage of the FREE literature offered in alt-weeklies." But I can't do that unless the alt-weeklies continue to be published, and I can't expect the publishers to continue publishing if it's not a profitable exercise.
And the publishing is not a profitable exercise if the money-makers do not pay for it. And money-makers will not pay for it if it does not make them more money. And it only makes them more money if people who take advantage of the FREE alt-weeklies (like I do) also participate in the money-makers' events & sales & services (like I cannot).
While I can't financially support the publishers (THROUGH the alt-weeklies THROUGH the money-makers), I do 'fulfill my duty' by supplying Digital Word-of-Mouth.
What do the alt-weeklies call those 'little mentions'? I think they're 'co-sponsors' (although that may just be "something poetic," as a former editor-in-chief called my 'Digital Word-of-Mouth' "Poetry") ... a better word might be sub-sponsors, as 'the money to the publication' might come from 'only the main sponsor'—the main sponsor might get the money from the other sponsor, but 'the check to the publication' probably names "only the main sponsor."
(if it were a TV-ad, I think they'd say 'such-&-such event
is brought to you by- or with help from-these
companies'; although sometimes the logos will
come after the note "PRESENTED BY" ...)

You know something about that word-history that
I don't mention (and that probably isn't mentioned
below)? 'Fill us in on it'- or just tell me what you
think (or ask me about something in this- or another-
word that confuses you) with a comment below,
