The word "Aunt" is built on another baby-talk word "Mother" (other than "Mama," but very similar to it ... something like aumMa; also related are "Grandmother, Old Hag, old Woman, Procuress, Title to use when Accosting Elderly Females").
The word "Uncle" carries the scent of "Grandfather, one's Adult Male Relative Other-than one's Father" (Usually from the Maternal Side of one's Family ... Brother-in-Law, Son of a Sister; Kindly Title for a Worthy Old Man).
Dutch Uncle - an uncle who gives stern advice; Welsh Uncle - male first-cousin of one's parent.
