'That word' (below-hyperlinked to a Stargate-Wiki's description of the Stargate-Chevrons) is built on an even-deeper source ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which our lexicon stands ...

The word “Chevron” is built on ancient words that mean "the |Structure of |Wild |Goats' |Hind-|Legs" (used for a |Device- or |Rafter-in the |Shape of an Inverted-V ... see also |Gambrel, |Props, |Stays, Short Pieces of |Timber for |Support (|Chamoix), |Cab).

Stargate Command's leading Gate-Technician gives us 'a look behind the curtain': telling us how he announces that the Stargate's 'chevrons' (the several locking mechanisms spaced evenly around the gate's edge, activating on symbols (on a rotating strip within the gate-door) in a dialed gate-address's sequence) are "Encoded," until he ad-libs the announcement on the last chevron: when the gate's Wormhole Connects, he announces the chevron is "Locked."

He's also responsible for Opening & Closing the Iris of the Stargate—tho they thought about Automating the open/close-function, all the SG teams decided that–to make sure the Goa`uld and other aliens were unable to 'hack' their way through Earth's Stargate–it would be better to keep a Human Factor in the process.
And I remember 'the gas company':
