The word “Breakfast” is a compound of the words “Break & Fast (obviously the 'period of not eating,' not 'speedy' or 'holding firm').”
The word "Fast" is built on words that mean "to Hold, Guard" (above the same root as the adjective).
... and no, that has almost nothing to do with "Fastidious."
