That word (hyperlinked below)—I felt like there might be something more to that word ... something crucial that firms the foundation upon which the linked discussion builds ...
The word “Gay” is built on “Pretty” and/or "Stately, Beautiful, Spendid, Showily Dressed" and/or "Sumptuous, Rich, Ornate" and/or "Shining, Glittering, Gleaming, Bright, Vivid" and/or "Decked-out in Finery" and/or "Moderately, Rather, Considerable" and/or "Promiscuous" (and fairly-recently "Homosexual").
So homosexuals didn't steal this word from a lexicon where it meant something more like "Merry" ... they probably accepted the word's 'Promiscuous'-meaning (notably in the old movie The Gay Shoe Clerk, where he's called 'gay' simply because he kisses girls right after he meets them!)
Or it might simply be the acronym for "Good As You."
