The weapon is called a 'phaser,' but it's not used to "phase" the enemies you shoot at. The word is from "PHASEd Energy Rectification" ... and/or modeled on the science-fiction LASER-gun (but modified to keep it original ... science-adviser Harvey Lynn told STAR TREK-creator Gene Roddenberry).

According to Future War Stories, the phaser is "a particle directed energy beam weapon that fires the artificial rapid nadion effect particles via a plasma stream producing a pulsed protonic charge ..." I guess that is to say it 'rectifies the phase of the energy between its barrel & the targeted object.' 'Rectify the energy-phase' ... d`what?

So I guess the phaser 'magnetizes' the atoms between its barrel & the targeted object (rearranging their electrons to line them up like the magnets in a row of compasses).

The 'plasma'-or-whatever is just an imaginary substance (not even real within the fictional universe) that people imagine in order to 'fool themselves' into thinking the machine's doing the work (rather than your own powerful mind) ... like when you feel like you're being 'filled with the Holy Spirit' when all that's really happening is "you're deep breathing while thinking of something comfortingly-peaceful," ...

or like when you feel like 'comedians heal you with their humor' when all that's happening is "their jokes and gags and hi-jinks take your conscious mind off your problems and that lets your subconscious mind get to work (directing your "amazingly & wonderfully made" immune-system to do what it was designed to)!"
